That doesn't sound like it would belong into a "model" format.

AFAIK most engines have a somewhat different concept of what a 
"material" is. So possibly any material specification inside a model 
could actually cause that the same model is displayed differently with 
applications, as every may have a slightly different understanding of 
what a "material" consists of and how it is displayed. In addition, some 
designs may require a separate definition of model and material data.
